From Slim Harpo to Kenny Neal, the “Chicken Scratch” is a style that graces countless sides from the region’s greatest artists. And it’s all because of one quiet, unassuming man: Baton Rouge’s James Johnson. This photo was captured at Johnson’s release of his first solo album at the age of 74. My signed copy of this album is one I treasure the most.
